Eclipse

My friend Caroline’s show “Eclipse” opened today at the Peterborough Art Gallery. I really enjoyed the large-scale video and film installations, as well as the elegant storyboards documenting the process. She examines the relationship between scientific inquiry and technology from a much more politicized perspective than I do. I like that she does this, that she employs such an unique narrative structure to examine ideas like marginalized female identity and invasion of traditionally private spaces through technological tools.

This show connected with me on two levels. On one level, it was an enriching aesthetic experience in thinking about scientific content knowledge in the context of a NSF proposal that I’m supposed to contribute ideas to. On another, it heightened my awareness about the social and political nature of communities, and the biases that need to be acknowledged in these conceptual frameworks that stress participation and membership.
